self check inThe past few days have been a bit of a whirlwind. I ended my time at one job, spent a great weekend at home and away from the city and then jumped right into my new role. It feels great to be getting back to PR, working with a bunch of talented people in a fast paced environment –but boy, things are picking up fast!

The change of pace and steady filling calendar are both welcomed, but will absolutely require some life adjustments. The only way to respond to change is with change. It’s easy tor resist at first –we’ll try to keep waking up at the same time even after entering new roles only to find ourselves late. Or plan complex meals for the week only to find ourselves tossing fresh produce and digging through menus for the fourth time in one week.

It’s important to be flexible, and resist the urge to…well, resist.

When things start to change and adjustments are called for, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by all of the shifting and moving. Getting uncomfortable is exactly that, uncomfortable.

I’ve been writing a post it everyday for the past few days now, to remind myself to check in and make sure that I’m bending and not breaking as all of the change occurs. I’ve been titling be well and just writing simple reminders to myself like to drink enough water, take breaks from staring at a computer screen and to go to bed at a reasonable time.

This little daily check in probably doesn’t seem like a lot, but it definitely makes a big impact. Just taking the time to dedicate a moment to self care –reminding yourself that taking care of you does matter, is important.

If you’re also in the midst of some significant changes –or maybe resisting the change happening around you, I hope you’ll adopt these small check ins as well. Here are some questions to ask yourself:

When is the last time I ate a real meal?
Did I really rest well during my last sleep?
Have I had enough water?
When is the last time I checked in with a loved one?
Am I wearing an outfit that makes me feel confident and comfortable?
Am I over-consuming social media or any form of media?
When is the last time I had a really good conversation with someone?
Am I actually being productive or are you just really busy?

Check in with yourself as often as you need to and be sure to follow up in the areas you aren’t doing as well in. Embrace the change, stay flexible and thrive in any situation.

  1. I just started getting a bimonthly self-care subscription box, which included access to a sekf-care-focused Facebook group. It’s an incredible, diverse, supportive, interesting group of women sharing resources, ideas, & tips for self-care & boosting one another up when needed. It’s really helped remind me to take time for myself & shown me new ways to do so. So important!

  2. I love this post because you are bringing up such a great question. I too find myself going through life and wondering why I feel off or I can’t think straight. It’s because I don’t stop and do a self check on myself. This post has given me much to think about and apply to my own life.

  3. Too often, we run on auto-pilot, so it’s a nice reminder to check-in with ourselves more often than not! Self-care is so important, and it’s something I think people take for granted. I purchased a diffuser recently and add some peppermint oil into it to really stop, breathe, and just be present. Lovely post!

  4. I work in politics, just started last month, and yes I completely agree. Sometimes it’s so important to ask yourself those simple questions because you will forget.

  5. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve neglected to care for myself properly or allow myself to recharge. I know this is something that I need to change and I am getting better at making sure I take better care of myself and just show myself more love and attention than I do. I typically take out time on Sundays to do so.
