Friday Reads featuring diverse books

Happy Saturday, friends! I hope you’re all having a productive and intentional weekend so far.

After procrastinating editing this video until the literal eleventh hour, I’m happy to be sharing my first Friday Reads video with you all!

I was inspired to film this after realizing how many books being talked about on social media and even on my own shelves were new releases by female authors of color. It is so important to me to be a diverse reader. I try not to limit myself to any one genre of book. I love learning about the world through the perspectives of characters who aren’t like me.

Readers are learners by nature, we absorb worlds and information like sponges because we are constantly being taken to new places through the page. Reading diversely helps to keep those adventures going, and keep the magic of reading alive. The last few years have been great for a resurgence of diverse reads across many genres, and especially in YA books. It’s no longer acceptable to have a cast of all white, straight, thin, able bodied characters in every novel. Our books are reflecting our world, and I couldn’t be more excited about it.

 Books Mentioned:

Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng

Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows by Balli Kaur Jaswal

The Wedding Date by Jasmine Gilloury

The Astonishing Color of After by Emily X.R Pan
