I get asked a lot about my skincare routine but honestly, I don’t really have one. There are a few things I make sure to do every day or every night but for the most part, I listen to my skin.

That being said, I think it’s important to note that my skin has never really been super problematic. In high school, I had breakouts occasionally but never to the point of saying I had acne struggles. Now, I can count on the same three pimples around the time I get my period, but that’s about it. Anything else that pops up on my skin is usually a lifestyle issue.

Extra dryness and huge pores usually means that I’m traveling. When I get super oily, that usually means I haven’t touched my kitchen and have been indulging in the worst (or best?) greasy takeout. (Which usually means I’m getting my period…it’s a vicious cycle).

So because my skin is classified as “normal” or slightly combination skin, I focus more on keeping it fresh rather than attacking specific problems.

Like I said, I mix up my routines pretty often and just listen to what my skin needs. But here are a few rules I tend to stick to when it comes to skincare.

1. Start on the inside

I’m not the only one who’s skin issues are normally linked to diet. It’s all of us! What we eat and drink impacts every single aspect of how we live. From how much energy we have in the morning to have bright and glowy our skin looks, it starts within. Stay hydrated, eat those leafy greens every day and practice balance in your daily diet.

And, if you’re like me, remember that coffee is dehydrating so if you’re on cup number 3, you’re going to need an extra water boost to un-do that damage.

2. Removing makeup is key

This may be a controversial opinion, but I think taking off all of your makeup is even more important than washing your face every night. Did I lose you? Hear me out!! On the nights when you come late and just want to get in bed, I think it’s fine to thoroughly remove all of your makeup and then head to bed. It’s those products that do the most damage if they sit too long, and if you’re using the right makeup removers, you should be good to wait to do a deep wash in the morning.

Some makeup removers I love:

3. Cheap cleansers are okay

There are lots of $30 and $40 face washes and cleansers on the market that you won’t catch me buying. Do your research, and make sure that the ingredients in any product you use are safe and won’t cause longterm damage. But, I think there’s a reason that many dermatologists recommend Cetaphil as a go-to cleanser. There are also so many easy DIY cleansers that you can make that are all natural and gentle on the skin (working on a post with some recipes!).

4. Splurge on things that sit on your skin

I heard a podcast where the owner of a skincare brand said to always splurge on things that spend a long time on your face. Moisturizers, SPF, serums and creams spend a lot of time on your skin! Unlike cleansers which are on our faces for a minute or two. I don’t think you need to reach for the $100 serum or moisturizer, but I’m much more likely to spend more on these products.

It’s also important to remember that these products can only really work once you’ve cleansed well and take care of your insides! You can slap all of the moisturizer you want on a dehydrated body and never have that glowy face.

These rules probably seem very simple, but they work for me! I’m working on two YouTube videos that go more into the products and brands I love using on my skin, so make sure you’re subscribed! Tell me, what skincare rules do you swear by?!
