Journaling is an amazing way to check in with yourself, document your life and feelings and free your brain from unwanted mental clutter. Staring at a blank page can be intimidating, I get that. And having to (over)think about where to start is the number one barrier to actually, you know, starting.

For the month of July, I created 31 journal prompts, one for every single day of the month, to help myself and all of you feel inspired to start or restart a daily journaling habit. You can find them all archived on my Instagram highlights, but I’m also sharing them here for easy access.

Whether you’re working your way through these for the first time or the 50th time, I hope you find them helpful, and that you feel inspired to write and write often. Happy journaling.

The July Prompts

Week one
  • What worked and went well in the previous month? What do you need to do this month to be successful?
  • Write about something you’ve been neglecting that requires more of your focused attention. What’s the thing? What would happen if you dedicated more time to it?
  • How would you describe your quality of life? Are you happy with it? Why or why not? What, if anything, would you change?
  • What does real rest look like? How can you experience that in this moment?
  • Be grateful in advance. Write a thank you letter to the week/day/month ahead.
Week two
  • Write about your strengths. What are you really good at? How can you showcase and celebrate those strengths?
  • What limiting beliefs are you holding onto? What are they limiting in your life?
  • Write positive affirmations for 10 minutes straight.
  • What are your core values? How do you live them out?
  • When it’s passed, what will you miss about this season of life?
  • What does it mean to show up fully? How do you look/sound/feel when you do?
  • Write about the relationship you have with yourself.
Week three
  • Who are your role models? What are they modeling for you? Who do you think views you as a role model? What are you modeling for them?
  • What do you do when things get tough? What are your coping mechanisms? Are they healthy? Why are they comforting?
  • Write about something you’ve healed from. If there are things that hurt you that you still haven’t healed from, address them.
  • If you had 48 hours completely free with no obligations, how would you spend them?
  • Write about a choice you’ve made that has significantly shaped the outcomes of your life.
  • Which areas of your life need stronger boundaries? How has a lack of boundaries caused you to be violated?
  • What have you learned from your greatest successes and failures? What did they teach you about yourself?
Week four
  • Imagine this portion of your life was a movie. What genre would it be? What would the soundtrack be like? Are you the hero or the villain?
  • What can you do today to simplify your life? How would you benefit from making life simpler?
  • What areas of your life do you give too much to (time, energy, etc)? How can you add more balance?
  • Write about the last time you felt true peace. How can you sustain that?
  • Write about a time you settled for less. Why did you do it? What were the effects?
  • What does it mean to honor your body? Have you dishonored your body recently?
  • What color best describes the energy you put out into the world? Why?
Week five
  • What do you wish people better understood about you? How does being misunderstood impact you?
  • If you were building a self care toolkit, what items would you place in it?
  • Imagine that you have changed roles with your therapist. What would you tell yourself during the session?
  • Reflect on the month you’ve just finished! How do you feel about 31 days of consistent journaling? What happened during the month that impacted your journaling (or other) habit?

  1. Thank you for sharing these on your blog, Amber! I didn’t make time to follow the prompts in July but I’m hoping to keep up in August. It would be interesting to answer these questions monthly and see how the reflections change over time.

  2. Thank you for putting these all in one place on your blog! I started in July but got derailed throughout the month. I’m printing this out so I can make it a priority in August!

  3. Just started these for August. Thank you so much – I love the focus and encouragement (only 10 minutes! I can do that.)
