What makes a home?I’ve moved more times than I would care to mention. And the only thing I’ve gained from this experience is confirmation that I truly loathe moving.

But my disdain for moving goes beyond the torture that is packing, unpacking or apartment hunting, but rather because I have an overwhelming desire to be settled. To sit still for a while, and make a home. To have a space that’s private, but still inviting –that I can curate to be a little slice of me, the ultimate paradise.

My current living situation –a tiny apartment I share with a roommate, definitely doesn’t fit that ideal. And honestly, most of your twenties involves moving, getting settled and unsettled all at the same time. Or living just to get through a certain phase of life, working towards something more permanent.

What makes a home? This episode of the Life Lately Podcast puts it in perfect perspective. You have to make a home where you are, because sometimes you may not be able to get into the home of your dreams right away.

And I’m slowly coming to accept this fact, and realize that wherever the next few months lead me (I’ll be apartment hunting again in the next few months). So instead, I’ve been thinking about the values I’d hope to infuse into a home. Even if I can’t fill it with my dream decor, there are always little ways you can showcase what truly matters to you.

What makes a house a home?Things like making lasting memories, spending time with the people I love, working on the projects I’m really passionate about. And there are so many little things you can fill a space with to help make a temporary space deliver long term comforts. Like sentimental bedding, little trinkets gifted from someone special. Or a table just big enough to house the girls for frequent Sunday brunches (I’ve always wanted to be the brunch house).

Not being in my dream space, at first, really got me down. Although I am so grateful to be where I am, in a safe neighborhood and a space where I can be comfortable and get settled. I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s had these feelings.

So together, we can focus on making where we are the best possible space and stop living in the someday, maybe.

  1. I’ve moved SO MANY TIMES & just learned that I’ll be moving again by the end of this month – to another unit in my building, a better one, BUT STILL. I had just finally made this one feel like home, & now it’s all going to be disrupted again. But I’m looking forward to settling in at the new place, making it mine, & hopefully not leaving for a very, very long time…

  2. I feel because I’ve traveled a lot and stayed gone for months, I feel like I am ok with moving. But I also do completely understand wanting to make a home, I just recently found myself purchasing more “home like” things i.e. pantings, table decor, etc. even though I know that I will be moving in a year I am still try to create a sense of home even in the space that I do have.

    1. I think that’s the key: just creating a home wherever you are, even if you’re going to move again, rather than waiting to move into the perfect home.
