do your friends speak your language?

Some of my closest friends are the amazing people I’ve met in college. Most of us had similar (or the same) major, interests and hobbies –as most friends do, right?

As internships and class work transformed into job offers, freelance gigs, personal brands and client work, it’s been great to know that my friends aren’t just there for me, they really get it.

I can vent about a freelance project with a client who isn’t being timely or clear and know that my friend will completely get what I’m going through and has probably been there too. If I’m stuck on something at my full time job, I know I can g-chat my fellow PR friends for a dose of support and clarity. And when I’m ready to do something new on the blog or up the ante with my side hustle, my fellow freelance and blogger friends have insights for days.

It works, it’s easy and it’s helpful.

So people are always shocked to find out how completely opposite my best friend and I are. I’m super creative, wordy, visual –always thinking about the deeper meaning and impact of things. My best friend is much more left brained than I am. She’s great with numbers, able to make logical decisions without as much hassle as I take.

When I try to talk to her about blogging or creative projects, she’s always happy to listen but definitely does not get it.

Still, our friendship works so well because when it comes to our values, we are one in the same. Still, you’d never know that just by skimming the surface of our friendship.

So in your friend groups and supportive circles, how do the people you love speak your language? And if they do, or don’t, how does this impact and reveal itself in your relationships? Let’s talk about it in the comments!

  1. Many of my close friends from high school were into photography and graphic design, so it was actually THEM who got me interested in all that in the first place. I have literally two friends in college who are into photography like I am. And whilst I don’t have friends who blog, I do have friends who are conscious about online presence. I definitely get you about this “speaking your language” thing. I also have quite a few close friends who aren’t into photography/graphic design/blogging who I LOVE and talk about meaningful things and meaningless things with; we just don’t talk about photography/graphic design/blogging in such emotional detail. But all my friends are used to waiting for me to take pictures of their food before I allow them to dig in ;P -Audrey | Brunch at Audrey’s
