If you’ve been following me for a while, you know that the only thing I hate more than moving itself is packing. When I was apartment hunting this time around, I was really looking for a place that I could see myself staying in for no less than two years.

I’ve covered moving and shared some of my top tips for getting through the process as much as possible without going insane. But now that I’m moving into a space that I know I want to be in longer and without any roommates, I’m trying to be even more diligent in the prep and packing process.

Throwing away large amounts of things

Think large garbage bags hitting the curb every weekend from now until moving day. Typically when I’m planning to move, I throw things on a surface level. If it’s still useful to me, I’d more than likely take it with me. But I’ve realized that really just reads to me bringing a bunch of unnecessary clutter with me.

I was going through things last night, and realized how many “almost finished” hair and beauty products I have (which should have probably been tossed a while ago) that I can get rid of. How many times have I moved with a box full of hair products and soaps that only come with me to collect dust someplace new? Tossing it!

3 Things I'm doing to prepare for my upcoming move

Creating a very organized inventory sheet

Rather than getting excited about all of the things I want to get for my new place, I want to hone in on all of the things that I won’t need to buy right away. I’ve been going room by room and taking note of what I have and the condition of the item. If it’s still in good shape and is something that I will actually use regularly, it can come along. If not, I’m tossing it.

Thinking less about shopping and more about decluttering and space saving this time around.

Selling and donating

Since I’m moving into a studio, I want to be able to maximize the space that I have and use it in the best ways possible. There are some things that I know I should have sold months ago, but I’m putting the pressure on to get them out in the next few weeks.

I’ll also be donating as much as I can, so the things I have that are in good condition but won’t be useful to me any more can go to good use.

….. any other recent college grads realize how many t-shirts you have?! From every homecoming, on campus event or free giveaway, I could probably cover a city block in t-shirts! They have to go!

Although the apartment search and moving processes make me want to cringe a little, I am super excited to finally feel like I’m getting settled. I’ll be sharing updates (and photos soon) as things progress, but in the meantime, what first apartment or moving content would be helpful to see here?!

  1. I’m moving into my new apartment at the beginning of the school year, so I’m very excited to read about this! I’ll definitely be throwing stuff away; I want to try the Throw 100 Things Away challenge. Omg after high school I realised how many t-shirts I accumulated… It’s hard to get rid of them due to sentiment, but they aren’t doing anything! -Audrey | Brunch at Audrey’s

  2. I finally recently chucked a ton of T-shirts because I realized I NEVER wore them, not even to bed. I’d been keeping them as “pajama shirts,” but they didn’t even get used for that! I’ve moved so many times that I just can’t bear bringing anything extra with me. Good luck!

  3. We’re a month away from a move, and have been doing a lot of going-through-things (as well as packing up stuff that isn’t used daily, so it’s less to deal with when the time comes). But we already know that there are some things that we have packed (and haven’t packed yet!) that we are wanting to get rid of, but we haven’t the mental energy to deal with that *and* the stress of moving just yet (think sentimental items and such). But soon enough, we’ll unpack it in the new place and *hopefully* go “yeah, that can go now.” It’s the backwards way to do it, but we are backwards people 😉
