When lock down first hit, I decided to upgrade my at home coffee set up since I’d be making coffee at home indefinitely. I decided to grab a machine that had been on my wish list for years, a Nespresso. I went with the Nespresso Vertuo Plus in matte black, which was the perfect and most sleek addition to my coffee bar.
I get asked questions about this machine all the time, and whether I think it was worth the investment so I figured we were due for an official update.
The TLDR: Four years in, I still love this machine and would absolutely purchase it again if I was starting fresh. I think if you live alone, or are one of a few coffee drinkers who wants a one cup solution, this is a great option.
FAQ: Have you had any issues with the machine?
In four years, I’ve only had one major issue that required maintenance. My machine started leaking, which didn’t seem like a big deal at first, but quickly escalated when the machine stopped making coffee altogether.
The Nespresso support team was super helpful. Because the issue was caused by a leak, I was able to send my machine off and get it repaired for free. The entire process took less than two weeks and they also reimbursed me for the cost of the pods I had used (which were brewing watery coffee due to damage).
I was grateful that the issue was an easy fix!
FAQ: Do you find the pods to be expensive?
I won’t call them cheap! I think because it’s just me, I go through sleeves slower than someone with a household full of coffee drinkers, and spend a bit less. I usually purchase 5-6 sleeves of coffee about 3-4 times a year. It’s worth it to me, but I do wish they had more retail partners so that generic options were available.
FAQ: Have you tried a reusable pod?
I haven’t. I’ve read a few stories online about how using those off brand pods can cause issues for what’s covered if you need repairs and would rather play it safe.
FAQ: How do you take your coffee?
In the morning, if I’m making coffee at home I’m making one of these things —
- An iced americano with a double espresso pod, water and a bit of creamer. I love trying new flavors so I’ll either add a bit of vanilla, or add a splash of flavored creamer in addition to my half and half.
- An iced red eye with cold brew (usually Stok brand) and creamer. Again, always love adding a bit of flavor to these.
- A hot coffee with half and half. If I’m feeling really jazzy, I’ll had a bit of sugar in the raw.
FAQ: What are my favorite Nespresso Pods?
After four years of drinking coffee on this machine, I’ve tried a lot of pods. So I feel really solid when I go to place an order and refresh my stash. While I truly have never had a bad pod from Nespresso, here are the pods that ALWAYS make it into my order:
Coffee
- Mexico
- Bianco Forte
- Melozio (Regular and Decaf)
- Stormio
Espresso
- Bianco Doppio
- Double Espresso Dolce
- Double Espresso Chiaro
Seasonal Hits
These are only available during certain seasons but I’m always sure to grab them when I can —
- Tropical Coconut – made for iced coffee and perfect for summer!
- Pumpkin Spice Cake – this is the official start of fall in my house!
- Gingerbread – Truly taste like a spicy gingersnap cookie!
