Seasons of change, big transitions and dealing with those pesky growing pains are not easy. By any means.

SPoT was recently included in a list of 15 favorite blogs (thanks, Jess!), which included a description of how I always let this space reflect where I am in life. I’ve never been more flattered by any comment about the blog, because that’s truly what I aspire to do with anything I share online. To make it as real, genuine and reflective of my real life as possible.

So it makes sense that as I’m entering a season of transition, change and am absolutely feeling all kinds of growing pains that I need to get my thoughts out in this space to help make sense of them offline.

So here we go.

I’ve been slacking on creating content overall. I’ve hit publish on fewer and fewer posts each month despite numerous drafts I’ve started and dozens of outlines, lists and ideas I have in my notebooks. I’ve felt discouraged by my numbers on social media and let that stop me from getting creative with what I post and having a consistent presence on different platforms.

I used to start off the month with a quick review of what worked and what flopped – on the blog, on Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter.

I haven’t done one of those analysis in months and my content has been weaker because of it.

And don’t get me started on my nonexistent YouTube channel and the newsletter that many of you have signed up for, but that I can’t seem to hit send on.

The highs have been really high (like working with Underlined on their Instagram campaign, which was really motivating). And the lows have been super low (like my experience with switching to an Instagram biz account, and the revelations that brought).

I say all of this not to garner sympathy from you guys, but just to put it out there that I’m not perfect, I don’t have it all figured out and, like many other imperfect bosses out there, I’m doing the best that I can in each moment.

Next week, I’ll be headed to Minneapolis to speak at the Your Own Way conference and I feel like this will help pull me out of my creative rut and really gain some clarity. I’m hoping to make some big moves and impact in the next few months – with the blog and in my career overall. I think being surrounded by so many likeminded creatives is just the thing I need to help propel me forward.

At the start of 2017, I set some big goals for myself. One of the biggest ones was rebranding to Space on Third, and I’m certainly proud of what I created. The other two big goals I set –launching services and creating a website around then and creating video content, I’ve been dragging my feet with. There’s a little more than two months left in this year, and I plan on adding both of these goals to my done list before the new year.

I hope you’ll hold me accountable!

In the comments, I’d love for you to share what you do when you’re in a period of transition or change, and how to manage your creativity in the interim. We all have different ways of managing our stresses, so let’s learn from each other.

Other resources I’ll be using:

  • Staying incredibly organized by using my planner for everything from deadlines to meal planning. Here’s the exact one I use.
  • Now that Laura Casey’s Power Sheets are available, I’ll be purchasing to get more intentional with my goals and intentions in life and business.
  • I’ll also be reading Laura Casey’s book Make it Happen, rereading The Alchemist which always inspires me and digging into Broke Millennial to start getting my money habits in order. Any other book recommendations?
  • Starting my 2018 blog business plan!

  1. Congrats on being features in Jess’ favourites! I always appreciate how there’s purpose to the content you post, and it doesn’t just “add to the noise”–it says something. // As a fellow book lover, it’s been exciting seeing you work with Underlined on Instagram 🙂 // I saw you mention Instagram business accounts on Twitter and am intrigued to hear more about it! I’m not planning to switch myself, but I still find it interesting. // Good luck with accomplishing your last two goals! -Audrey | Brunch at Audrey’s

  2. Hey there! I know how you feel in terms of going through changes and being “stuck” creatively. I find that I can help keep things on track if I make sure some other areas of my life have constants in them. For example, if I’m going through physical changes (physically moving, an illness, etc), I make sure to try and keep my reading habits consistent – it makes me feel like I’m in control of at least one area of my life then! And when I’m not feeling creative myself, I always try to keep an eye on others that inspire me (your blog + social channels included!). That being said, I’m also in a bit of a “low” right now. I went *months* without publishing a single post. Then one day I decided to redesign the layout of my blog… It’s still very much a work in progress and a struggle for me right now. I’m not happy with it, but I’m trying to push through and focus on what’s important to me and why I write to begin with. ANYWAYS, that’s a long way of saying you should try not to think of the growing pains as a setback, but rather a bump in the road to where you’re headed. Good luck! xoxo

    1. Jenny, thanks so much for this comment. You’re so right about one little change sparking motivation again. I got new bedding over the weekend, maybe that has to do with the resurgence of my blogging motivation and boost in creativity?! I hope we both continue to stay driven and create like crazy ♥️♥️♥️
