Life adds up fast. There seems to always be something that needs to be purchased and the price tags just get bigger and bigger.

When you’re a creative, I’ve found that you’ll have you typical big expenses (upgrading your furniture, paying off big debts, that really really perfect everyday tote bag). And then, you’ll have bigger expenses for your business or blog that require more planning before you swipe that card.

I’ve already shared a list of small investments you can make in your blog if you’re on a tight budget. But eventually as your blog and brand grow, you’ll need to make larger investments that match that growth.

For me, my biggest investments have been on design work, online classes and courses to hone my skills and keeping and buying new equipment. I’m in the process of purchasing a camera, lenses and new software, all of which adds up quickly.

Spending happens fast, but it’s so worth it when you start creating even more amazing content. And it’s definitely doable to save and earn back those dollars later on!

Here are some steps to take to help you plan on investing big.

Determine what you need versus what you’d like to have.

Seems simple, but when you’re excited about seeing growth and passionate about what you’re creating, you’ll seem to need everything. Go slowly. Build your collection of equipment overtime so you don’t have to shell out major bucks early on.

Start with a camera, then add lenses as you’re able to learn more about the craft and save. Buy a premade theme to use for a year or two until you can afford to work with a designer.

Research, research, research!

If you’re spending big bucks, you want to make sure you’ve done your homework and are only spending what you need to. Check different retailers before buying equipment. See if there are any discounts or rewards available through your job, credit card company or groups you may belong too.

Shopping around is key.

Answer: what goal will I achieve by purchasing this?

I’ve met a lot of bloggers who have spent way too much money on cameras they don’t use, themes they didn’t stick with or “lifestyle” accessories they didn’t need just to keep up appearances.

Blogging can quickly turn into a comparison game. It seems that if you just get all of the right things, use the same tools, you’ll reap the same rewards. I’m here to let you know that nothing is that easy. Nothing comes together by chance.

If the big ticket item you’re buying won’t help you accomplish a specific goal, don’t buy it. Spend those dollars on something that matters.

Create a big goals fund!

Even when you aren’t looking for it, your next big purchase will find it’s way to you. Via an Instagram ad or just a big idea you get. It’s good to keep a saving mindset anyway, so why not create a fund for when these expenses show up? Decide to make a monthly contribution to your big, someday goals and put that cash somewhere you will not touch it!

  1. The biggest investment I’ve made for my blog is switching to a self-hosted platform, which I did just last May! It came with a free domain and everything 🙂 I first started blogging around the same time I first got my camera, which was handed down to me from my dad. So thanks to my dad for investing in my interest! -Audrey | Brunch at Audrey’s
