Fall in love
(image via vsco grid)

I am quite possibly the biggest hopeless romantic to ever walk the Earth.

I love, love. Love movies, love stories, love letters. And even I do agree –the US obsession with condensing all of the love into the month of February is a bit much, I love watching couples go the extra mile during this season.

If you write, follow or even casually read blogs, you’ve likely seen mention of this New York Times article all about falling in love. It mentions 36 questions that when asked seriously can cause even two strangers to fall for one another. I picked my top 16 questions, but you can read, ask and answer them all in the article.

Is that all? And they say love is hard…

Anyway, I like to think that the people who stop by here are more like friends than random strangers. I hope you feel the same way. So, I doubt we’d need to go through all 36 questions to become even more smitten with one another.

For the sake of ease, whenever you read “your partner,” that’s you.

Let’s fall in love…

01. Would you like to be famous? In what way?

Not famous, per-se but definitely well a known. Particularly in my field. I want people to think of me as the go to girl for all things PR, social media, brand strategy, blogging and content. I’ve had a dream of creating products that help people do whatever it is that they do better since high school, and these are the channels I plan to use to make that happen.

02. Before making a telephone call, do you ever rehearse what you are going to say? Why?

It depends. If it’s a professional call, I usually make a list of all of the points I want to make so I don’t forget anything. I have a tendency to think and talk fast, so that just helps to keep me on track.

True story — during the summer of my first internship, I had the realest experience with cold-calling a young intern can have. I was in the office working on projects and my boss calmly tells me “I need you to go call vogue and get some information.”

Of course I said what any good intern would say “oh, okay no problem.” And then, I broke out in hives and cold sweats. Vogue? What? Why not Oprah while I’m at it?! But I did it, after taking a few minutes to deep breathe in the bathroom and make a list of what I was supposed to get from the call.

So unless I’m calling Vogue again, I probably won’t rehearse.

03. What would constitute a “perfect” day for you?

A day spent with the people I love. My family and my amazing friends are some of the biggest supporters in my life so any time I spent with them, even doing nothing, makes for a good day.

04. When did you last sing to yourself? To someone else?

I perform sold out concerts in the shower every morning….please don’t inquire about ticket sales. As far as singing to someone else, I’m not sure. Most likely around Christmas time.

05. Name three things you and your partner appear to have in common.

E&M readers are a lot like myself in many respects (go figure). We all seem to be go-getters (or as I like to say goal-getters). We all have a desire to own something. We don’t just want to make something to give away, we want to call it our own. Thirdly, we are all on a journey –some for businesses, some for self and others for both. But we know that we’re going somewhere, and that once we get their we are going to rock it!

06. For what in your life do you feel most grateful?

I have so many things to be grateful for, but if I had to pick one, I’d have to say destiny. Every day in my life is far from perfect…far from it. But I do believe that there is a plan for my life much bigger than myself, this blog or anything else I could even attempt to wrap my head around. If you’ve read the Alchemist, you know that when something is meant to be, the entire universe makes sure that it will be. That, my friends, is destiny.

I know and understand that certain things have happened and worked out for me because it’s all apart of the plan. I don’t have to understand or question it. And more importantly, I don’t have to doubt it. It just is.

07. If you could wake up tomorrow having gained any one quality or ability, what would it be?

Sleep in. Seriously. Unless I stay up until 6am, I’ll always be up by 9:30 at the latest. I’m sometimes envious when my roommates are getting up at 11 or noon on the weekends.

08. Is there something that you’ve dreamed of doing for a long time? Why haven’t you done it?

Create a sell a line of day planners. Not just any planners, ones that help fit everyone’s lifestyle. I get that some people need to plan their life six months in advance and others take it one day at a time.

I’ve had a vision about it for a while, but it just isn’t time yet. After graduation, I think I’ll start making moves towards it.

09. What do you value most in a friendship?

Loyalty. I’ve had the same best friend since 7th grade and if there’s one quality that she embodies fully, it’s loyalty. I know that no matter how near or far we are from each other, I can count on her full support.

10. What is your most terrible memory?

When I was six years old, my grandmother passed away. We were really close, and that was the first time that I can ever remember having to deal with death.

The worst part? For years following that, I thought that I killed her. Leading up to her passing, she’d been very sick. I still remember sitting in the doorway to her room one night, and her asking me to get her a cup of water. I told her to wait until I was done playing.

Once she passed away a few days later, I just knew it was my fault. I didn’t even tell my dad this until I was a sophomore in college! Now, it seems so funny but at 6 it was a terrible thing to deal with.

11. If you knew that in one year you would die suddenly, would you change anything about the way you are now living? Why?

I’d be more spontaneous! I’m not a crazy risk taker…I really enjoy playing by the rules and get kind of mad when others don’t. But if I only had one year left, I’d make the most of it. Forget the rules!

12. Complete this sentence: “I wish I had someone with whom I could share … “

…my life with.

13. If you were going to become a close friend with your partner, please share what would be important for him or her to know.

I’m really sensitive. Like, really sensitive. I’ll always listen to what you have to say, but as soon as the words leave your mouth I’m going to start internalizing them insanely. I may not show signs of hurt feelings right away, but know that they may be there.

14. When did you last cry in front of another person? By yourself?

I think crying is a really healthy thing. It’s almost a bi-weekly occurrence for me. Sad tears, happy tears…it’s all good.

The last time I cried in front of another person was a week ago. It was a great cry. They cried too. And now, I think we’re both in better places. Cheers to moving forward.

15. Your house, containing everything you own, catches fire. After saving your loved ones and pets, you have time to safely make a final dash to save any one item. What would it be? Why?

My laptop. It’s such a huge chunk of who I am and what I do. Plus, it was the first big ticket item I was ever able to buy for myself, and I’m pretty proud of that.

16. Of all the people in your family, whose death would you find most disturbing? Why?

Definitely my father. I’m really close to my dad. He’s basically my best friend and the person I go to for everything from advice to a good laugh. The thought of him not being around isn’t one I can ponder easily.

Okay, let’s make this reciprocal. Head over to the article, or pick from the 16 above and share your answers in the comments! Or write your own love struck post and send me the link!

  1. I LOVED reading this article first time around in the NYT and I love your spin on it – I too am in love with the idea of love, and think that the whole concept behind this and the original study is just beautiful. I picked the question “I wish I had someone with whom I could share … “ as I feel I already share my love and life with someone, so I think my answer would be ‘my desk’, as I’ve just started a new job and it’s a little lonely at the moment! I’m a social creature by nature and I just miss having all my buddies at my old office 🙂 Thanks for this post! T xx

  2. I’m with you on saving the laptop. I actually had a house fire, and I remember crying over everything I lost on the computer. So much work and so many photos were lost… Love seeing a more personal side to your story!

  3. Ahh it’s so cute how we (readers) have taken the place of your partner for these questions :’) Before making a telephone call, I always think about what I want to say, whether it’s professional or casual. For some reason I get really anxious when making phone calls. Skype video calls included. -Audrey | Brunch at Audrey’s

  4. We’re surprisingly similar, especially on #13 – I feel like I’m constantly overanalyzing and mulling over things people said to me even years ago. Words just stick around in my chest. This was really interesting to read! xoxo
