Can we be real for a moment? February was a really hard month for me goal wise.

I don’t know if it was the winter blues or just a serious case of burn out but there was absolutely nothing remotely motivating about that month. Hence –I took a step back from blogging for the month because forcing it was doing much more harm than good.

I remembered this post that Meg wrote where she talked about 10 goals she was trying to hit on a daily basis. Daily goals that, if practiced consistently, would become intentionally rooted habits. Typically, I think of goals as being either long term (accomplish-able over a 1+ years) or short term (weekly or monthly). This recent flux in motivation has encouraged me to rethink the way I set, organize (and achieve) my goals.

Instead of making monthly lists of things I hope to get done which lead into my “larger scheme” of things. I’m breaking my goal setting down a bit:

  • Daily Goals: Small things that I would like to incorporate into my daily routines. These are goals that will (hopefully) help me to be more grounded, intentional and presently rooted in my immediate needs. These goals are supposed to be super simple and easy to add into the regular mix.
    • DAILY GOALS FOR MARCH:
      1. Drink 124oz of water daily
      2. Cook/prepare breakfast every morning
      3. Read a minimum of five pages daily
      4. Work out at least 15 minutes daily
  • Weekly Goals: Larger items that I need to get done in order to advance to the next level in upcoming projects. These things are likely the sum of your daily to-do list, and are the things that really don’t want to get done (like those administrative things you put on the back burner).
    • WEEKLY GOALS FOR MARCH:
      1. Refresh the look and feel of the Move Letter
      2. Schedule two weeks of blog posts
  • Monthly Goals: Long term goals that I want to accomplish which play into the “larger scheme of things.” These are similar to the goals I set in my normal monthly goal setting posts.
    • MONTHLY GOALS FOR MARCH:
      • Apply for a minimum of five full-time post-grad jobs
      • Purchase domains and map out theme for the e-course site

How I Plan To #MakeItHappen

Setting goals usually isn’t the issue, right? It’s the making it happen part that seems to be the struggle. If you’re with me and want March to make up for what didn’t happen in February, follow me.

For Daily Goals — These are (seemingly) the easiest to accomplish so I focus on placing them into my every day routine. I start my day with a bottle of water through breakfast and use the iDrate app to make sure I take in all 124oz. I plan my workouts the night before and get them done right before or after dinner. I make sure I have all my breakfast materials in the kitchen and ready to go, so prep is no fuss.

For weekly goals — Treat these like hard work deadlines. You need to report to the boss that you go it done, so get it done! Jot the dates down in your calendar and set reminders so you don’t forget.

For monthly goals — I’m working these similarly to my weekly goal approach. The deadline for these goals is the end of the month, and I have weekly reminders set during times I’d typically have the chance to work on these items.

If you made it to the end of this post, I hope you own this month and #makeithappen. Tag your posts and photos of you out goal getting with the hashtag #EMGoals, I’d love to create community of hustlers, movers and makers so we can inspire and encourage each other.

If you still need a bit of a push on breaking out of a slump and getting in the mood to do the work, be sure to subscribe to the Move Letter. Monday morning, I’ll be sending out my tips for breaking free of winter blues and getting those gears in motion!

  1. I love how you have the monthly goals with weekly reminders! I’ve tried to set monthly goals for myself, only to not quite remember them…which turned into a big pile of nothing, because I didn’t set myself up to actually be aware of them except for in passing!
Also, I second the vote for a cute water bottle!

  2. I absolutely need to do this for March, January was an awesome goal month for me but February seemed to bring winter blues and a lack of motivation! Definitely ready to make March a more productive month than February was. Hopefully the arrival of spring will spur me along ;P

I like how you’re doing your goals, it’s similar to how I do mine but I think I need a little change of pace so I might try your method this month and see how I do 🙂

  3. I really like this structure of goal setting, I always seem to get a bit lost with my goals so splitting them into daily, weekly and monthly could definitely be helpful for me. Good luck with yours!

  4. I’m currently burnt out too, so I understand the stepping back. This however, is getting me a bit more out of my slump. Love how your goals are broken down. Makes it easier to obtain.

So glad you’re back to posting 🙂

    1. I hope you find your way out of a slump too. I blame it on what I’m calling ‘new year must do everything’ syndrome. We all rushed into 25, and should’ve paced ourselves instead.

      Hang in there 🙂

  5. This is such a great post! I never thought about breaking down my goals like this or that they could turn into habits.
