August was a busy but good month for me. I’m not going to lie, the first drops in temperature and preview to small weather to come has me so excited for cozy sweaters, candles and days spent curled up reading.
In all, I only finished three books in August. I started two others, one which I’m sure I’ll finish today and am absolutely loving (When Dimple Met Rishi) and another that I’m liking, but honestly not super into (The Circle).
That being said, all three books that I finished this month were 5 star reads, and all could be classified as some of my favorite books ever. Two of those three have book to movie adaptations, both of which I’ve seen and loved.
So while I didn’t breeze through as many books as I typically would, I’d still call August a great reading month.
Here are the books I read last month
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling
And this concludes my reread of the series. J.K does such an amazing job at bringing so many complex plot points and character traits to a satisfying and enthralling ending. Ever since I’ve finished reading this series, all I’ve wanted to do is start it again (should I just buy the audiobooks?!). This was one of my favorite books in the series, along with Prisoner of Azkaban and Goblet of Fire.
The Smell of Other People’s Houses by Bonnie Sue Hitchcock
This book was so beautiful and quickly found it’s place in my heart and bookshelf as a forever favorite. I didn’t expect to fall in love with this book so hard, or so quickly. It’s a quick read, and I read almost the entire thing (save 30 pages or so) on my flight from Philly to New Orleans. This story follows the lives of four teenagers living in Alaska in the 1970s. Their lives are each uniquely complex and different and yet the author winds them all together with some of the most gorgeous writing I’ve read all year. If you’re looking for a beautifully written character driven story that touches on complex issues and tugs at the heart, pick this up.
The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan
I remember the first time I saw this film, I was so intrigued by the stories of the women on screen. The book focuses on the relationships between Chinese mothers and their Chinese American daughters. Amy Tan is a master storyteller. So many of the stories made me think of interactions I’ve had with my own sister and mother. And the ending definitely made me shed a tear or two. Again, a great character driven story that will draw you in and really make you think tied together with stunning writing. I highly recommend this one!

I can’t believe that I haven’t read Amy Tan yet even though I’ve known about her for yeaaaars.
